French Friday: Edition Welcome Home Mr.T!

110709post1

(Il est à Paris as we speak.)

Date Night : Elle & Lui, Part 3

La Résolution des Conflits. To my surprise, last night's topic had major impact. Ok, communicating is tough but finding solutions isn't a walk in the park either. Two factors that made last night's date interesting and effective were a] I wasn't so tired and b] the speakers were charismatic and funny.

In a nutshell when it comes to conflict Mr.T is an hérisson and I am a rhinocéros. I know. Not pretty. But facts are facts. Or as they were so nice to point out last night, not everyone's reality is the same.

The things I came away with and would like to remember are these:

  • Normal is a tuer d'amour. I like this image. Basically, as soon as you see your relationship as normal you make way for taking each other for granted.
  • When there is conflict to be resolved, imagine the two of us sitting next to each other on a couch facing The Problem. (I never have been one for visualization, except for those two times I was in labor, but this image was helpful.) Often we sit on the couch with the problem between us or worse yet, we view the other person as The Problem.
  • Lastly, the idea of saying something complimentary like, "you have nice eyes" before trying to resolve The Problem. (Ok, I have to laugh. It sounded so right last night but as I type this out I don't see how a compliment will help right before I am going to charge at you. It's worth a try.)

After three weeks of these meetings I realize that it's fun to eat dinner with Mr.T and asses just how backwards we are at everything. It's nice to be aware even if I don't think we can change all of our behaviors at once. Or in one week. Now, if someone were to be hiding in our house and step out to grab my arm and say, "Denise, before you lose your shit, say something nice" that would be very effective. It would be scary and creepy, but effective.

[Elle & Lui is an 8-week program Thierry and I signed up for as part of our Date Nights.]
